There's a very-long-shot scenario where silver becomes remonetized. It requires: * Collapse of fiat currencies to the point of political rejection * Cheap technology for retail assay of silver, perhaps via hand-held spectroscopy, and * Cryptocurrencies fail for some reaon.
Oh and * paper and digital IOUs become too untrustworthy In such an unlikely scenario, you'd need silver for buying the coffee. Pieces of gold worth only $5 would be so small they'd get lost in your pocket. For smaller change we'd also be using some copper.
Possibly we could make gold microbeads & dispense them with microrobots. Insert your vial into payee machine. Vial dispenses the appropriate microbeads, receives and assays (via nanospectroscopy) the change. Then no need for silver as long as you trust your robotic vial.
At least on the topic of hand-held spectrometers, Scio is pretty interesting. I think they were focusing more on food, but maybe could work for precious metals.
