1/2 An interesting thought experiment. My first thought was: this sort of thing would make a decent computer game, with a randomized set of Great War alliances and a random set of winners and losers.

2/2 My second thought was: how does the project manager from 1925 explain to the game programmer from 1912 that Russia was in the winning alliance but lost so bad they wound up taken over by a German-backed communist revolution?
