No. There were hundreds of cypherpunks with different goals, ideologies and world views. • Digicash was the "payments". • RPOW, then BitGold were the "store of value + payments" (which are inseparable). The latter were the correct models and Bitcoin is designed after them.https://twitter.com/adam3us/status/1165200774655369216 …

Cypherpunks were always more interested in censor resistant global payment, than new gold store of value. Latter was just a means of deployment, attractive for being permissionless "no banking interface". /1

The whole idea of having an independent currency, rather than just more private or censorship resistant payments for existing currencies, didn't exist among either cypherpunks or academic cryptographers until libertarian futurists introduced it. @adam3us

Probably varies. For me I was more focussed on deployment than free floating value eg via people observing hashcash was like digital gold, and as a plausible way to bypass the permission and dependency on fiat gatekeepers, eg "ecash without a banking interface" (Wei Dai, b-money)

This predates those. (Of course, there is a great deal of cypherpunk/Chaum inspiration here, it went both ways). Later bit gold & b-money were both first proposed on the libtech-l list, something of an intersection of libertarian futurists and cypherpunkshttps://twitter.com/NickSzabo4/status/1159254552572387328 …

I wasn't on libtech but saw b-money when it was posted on cypherpunks. I think bitgold must have been at some point posted outside of libtech as I was aware of it pre bitcoin.

https://unenumerated.blogspot.com/2005/12/bit-gold.html … I finally wrote about it on the web because Hal Finney, who was also on libtech-l, wanted to cite it, along with hashcash, as an inspiration for RPOW. Before that I could only give him a link to my origins-of-money article :-) https://nakamotoinstitute.org/finney/rpow/index.html …

Didn't libertarian futurists introduce it before the whole cypherpunk movement though? I'm referring to, for example, Hayek's thoughts. Cypherpunks eventually made it happen, right?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYhEDxFwFRU&t=19m23s …

Hayek's thoughts made their way into the cypherpunks via the libertarian futurists.

Not a big fan of labels but “libertarian futurist” has a nice ring to it.
