In pastoral societies a great deal of 1:1 mapping is used, e.g. one stone into the bag for every sheep that goes through the gate, and one stone out of the bag for each sheep when they return. Don't actually have to say or memorize numbers.

"1:1 mapping" is how I think it worked when I envision stones were used for counting (and or money which may have been merged), I think that could be considered a math or "proto-math"
