A Must! + Arithmetic didn't initially develop for scientists, but for traders/accountants + Before 1930 Mathematics was about the real world. Then it got concerned with abstraction + Texts hide experiments in math leading to theorems. Ramanujan did experimental math. Even Euler.https://twitter.com/stephen_wolfram/status/1159131413511311361 …

if tribes in the amazon don't have words for numbers and don't use math explicitly it's because they lost it it's very likely, however, they use some form of counting and measurement, for example stones as counting devices and marks in their bodies as measurement, or steps, etc.

In pastoral societies a great deal of 1:1 mapping is used, e.g. one stone into the bag for every sheep that goes through the gate, and one stone out of the bag for each sheep when they return. Don't actually have to say or memorize numbers.

Cluster counting of sheep in big flocks....fives or 10s as they move through the gate. You either use a stone otherwise your attention must not drift

ya, when I worked in farms in the summers in argentina, we used the "cuenta ganado" literally "cattle counter" and we arbitrarily counted 5 or 10 per bead it's a leather rope with threaded leather beads mostly used as dressing/fashion today, they use drones to count cattle now!pic.twitter.com/hpDFDA26Ic

👍🏻👍🏻 well put! "1:1 mapping" is how I think it worked when I envision stones were used for counting (and or money which may have been merged), I think that could be considered a math or "proto-math" (and the bag and stones a "proto-abacus", thus "proto-computer"...ha)

Worked until stone-easing instituted to cover sheep deficit.
