As for my family, my father had to flee Hungary for freedom in the capitalist United States because of communist thugs calling themselves "anti-fascists".https://twitter.com/aantonop/status/1162888512233975808 …

As in they were forcefully removed from their farm Zimbabwe style? Did your grandparents end up staying in Hungary?
-
The silver lining from my POV is he had to flee to the U.S. where he met my mom. :-)

It’s a serious shame that after a public education, a college education, and 40 years on earth, I never learned about the decades-sustained Russian Communist apparatus of dehumanization until I read Gulag Archipelago.
-
Amazing that it's mandatory reading in Russian schools yet over here in the States school systems are trending exactly towards the same kind of intersectional thought.pic.twitter.com/g2FdcOtE4p

I've been chewing on Gulag Archipelago off and on for the past few months and am still only 2/3 into Volume 1 of 3. Fascinating must-read, with many parallels to neo-fascism today, but I might suggest the abridged version because holy cow it's long.
-
If there is an abridged then it might be what I would read if I ever did get around to it. I'm a failure at following through and finishing books.
-
Try speed reading. Whenever I realise that a book is not griping me and that it doesn't seem to be worth the effort and time of focused reading, I switch to speed reading so that I at least still get the gist if the entire book.
-
I don’t know if this theory applies to Gulag Archipelago. Solzhenitsyn felt compelled to memorize the names and stories of people he feared would otherwise get lost in the waste disposal system of the Archipelago. These books are, in part, a careful memorialization of them.
-
I haven’t read that book, but I’ll add to my reading list. What I find saddening is that those who have suffered the most at the hands of communist regimes, rightfully fear big government, are lost in the annals of history.
-
Indeed. I am editing a screenplay to tell the story of one survivor - because if it makes it to the screen, more people will be awakened, ideally.

This is very tricky topic. In Jugoslavia mostly we had more liberal (in classical terms) version of socialism. And although all the atrocities and elements of socialism were present, people have fond memories. So, it is tricky: the xountries that has the worst kind of socialism..
-
Learnt some lessons & mostly today they hate the socialists & have developed markets & democracy. Jugoslav countries are still dreaming about it, w/o any lessons learned, with Fragile democracies, limited markets & mostly anti-capitalist culture.

Many families were displaced after the dissolution of the Ottomon empire and attempt to divide the region known as Macedonia on geo-political and national boundaries with the Treaty of Bucharest. That animosity still lingers today.

I remember reading about this in the Terror House in Budapest. Disgraceful stuff.

My grand-grandparents were small business owners (a butcher & a carpenter) who lost it all when the communists came and confiscated everyone’s wealth. They were also declared bourgeois enemies of the state (exploiters) for having a couple of employees. People forget too easily.
