It goes back to Hayek, or at least it's what I concluded decades ago after reading Hayek and reading about the Hutterian Brethren (who can make a religious form of micro-socialism work up to a bit more than 100 people who've lived with each other most or all of their lives).

We lived in such groups for 2 million years of hominid evol., so socialism as an organizing scheme remains our brain's default. Didn't shake entirely loose even as bodies piled up in the 20th century, and grows more seductive as we get farther from pub. date of Gulag Archipelago.
