Two words: digital centralization. Your "money" is just bits on some stranger's computer, and it is way too easy and way too tempting to twiddle those bits.
Twiddling the bits of the centrally digitized entries which you call "your" "money" will generally be done under full legal authority, via gentle-sounding euphemisms (e.g. "negative interest"), and with strong support from the pseudoscientific prognostications of macroeconomists.
