I find it fascinating that in the middle of telling everyone for 3 years that Trump = H*tler, the left says that ppl should give up their last line of defense against a tyrannical gov't.

Because on this topic, as with immigration and much else, they have extreme disrespect for law. Antifa is busy stockpiling and training on guns while their leftist friends advocate 2A-violating gun control. Just because they ban guns does not mean they will give up theirs.
