If there’s no such thing as an original idea, it could well be the case Satoshi was writing notes on the conversations you were having openly with others 
I'm guessing it was more of a "Fight Club" sort of situation. Nick as Edward Norton and Satoshi as Brad Pitt. 
Proof-of-work timestamping was a very clever solution to distributed bookkeeping.
