‘Person of colour’ is fine. ‘Coloured’ isn’t. Why? Because of the historical connotations of ‘coloured’. Coloured only restrooms (US) or No Irish, No dogs, No Coloured. True. But it can be confusing for some, often older,people. While in a pharmacists recently, my mother needed to refer to another, absent staff member, but didn't know her name. She said she's the black one, but then felt obliged to say: sorry, is it ok to say that, I'm not sure?

Ridiculous that any she should have felt any hint of guilt or shame. It is the people who take offense that should be shamed and fired, not the people trying to get by in life.
