Interestingly this subculture drew its inspiration from Selgin & White, not Rothbard. I later became more Rothbardian from studying computer science & the origins of money, without having read Rothbard. The crucial part of gold free banking was the gold, not the IOUs.

"The crucial part of gold free banking was the gold, not the IOUs." The base certainly mattered. But comparing the record of gold-based free vs. central banking systems suggests that the IOUs--and specifically whether they were issued competitively or not--also mattered a lot.

It worked under the politically ideal conditions that prevailed during much of the 18th and 19th century in common law countries, but there is no prospect of politics in almost any country now returning to such conditions, alas.

Nick, could you please elaborate a bit on this, exactly which ideal conditions do you mean?

It's too long to enumerate. Lack of easily manipulable centrally digitized ledgers. Different and lower taxes. Better contract and negotiable instruments law. Far fewer regulations. Lack of socialist government employees trusted to enforce these free market laws.

So you'd say it remains... unenumerated? 😎

It is intersting to see how fiat currencies, which are IOUs, work poorly in countries with weak legal systems. This is in my view one of the key charactaristics of Bitcoin: It doesn't need a strong and costly legal infrastructure in order to have value.
