        Interestingly this subculture drew its inspiration from Selgin & White, not Rothbard. I later became more Rothbardian from studying computer science & the origins of money, without having read Rothbard. The crucial part of gold free banking was the gold, not the IOUs.

        More specifically: from computer security protocols I got the principle of trust minimization, from that principle & studying how gold IOUs ultimately failed, figuring out how to implement the properties of gold in cyberspace.

        Obviously one cannot ship gold atoms as network data. And I saw the failure of IOUs again, now digital (e-gold). So I needed to discover general principles of trust-minimized money I could apply to cyberspace. For that I studied other forms of early (trust-minimized) money.

        Thanks for this clarification. I was dismayed that Tim May was more influenced by Freedman than Rothbard. But as long as the important ideas rise to the surface it doesn’t really matter what path they take. Good work!
