      I’ve often thought that the most fundamental way to price things might be in joules. How much energy did it take to assemble this phone, to pull the materials out of the ground and shape them into that configuration?

      nah I like it - @baajis is talking longer term, as 3d printing tech improves, over an extended time-period, raw materials + joules are the new scarcity right. design ingenuity is scarce and costly, but replicable in a FOSS non-DRM world.

      It can't work as joule is not a fungible unit. A joule value depends on the location where it is consumed.

      hmm, isn't it just duration pragmatic 20 years, vs sci-fi what-if hundreds of years flights of fancy. super long term, humans or their augmented evolved descendants may yet build a dyson sphere to power the super computers need to switch our reality to the digital domain.
