What would have happened if Satoshi had picked a different S2F trajectory? I am curious to understand the answer for both a slower and a faster one. Is there a window beyond which Bitcoin could have failed because the window is too fast or too slow?

IMHO predictability is important, further specifics of the schedule not so much. And the security/trust minimization of these and other basic features of money is the most important desiderata of all.

Definitely agree about predictability from both @NickSzabo4 and @saifedean, but I've wondered bitcoin would even have caught on if the trajectory was purely linear. Some might say that it would be less decentralized, but the halvings are an amazing feature for sure.
But the math and cryptography are simply beautiful.
