Or they could just do the responsible thing and cut all spending, use all tax revenue to pay down the national debt, and then raise rates to normal 4-5%. SO EASY, why the fuck don't they get it?

Not at all easy, alas. For starters there are tends of trillions of dollars of government union and contractor funds that would be brought to bear to oppose it.

True, but anyone with a brain would do the math before unrecoverable Zimbabwe/Venezuela situation. No one wants cuts, no one wants to cut off their gangrene toe, but in the end they DO it, because it is the best choice.

Right up until the point those rates become negative - unheard of in Einstein's time - at which point all of that wisdom gets turned on its head. Gunna get ugly.

It’s worse than that though. Some interest rates are actually negative at face value, meaning you lose twice.

Indeed, this is a great deal more in-you-face blatant than the inflation tax, and made possible only where people store their cash in a digitally centralized manner that can be easily manipulated by strangers (i.e. bank and brokerage accounts).

Or when new cash is issuable whenever the issuer feels like it. Central bank interest rates can be anything they want, since the difference between what is and what isn’t can just be conjured into existence.
