It's only parents that teach kids to read. Teachers can only reinforce it.

True in my case, possibly an exaggeration in many others e.g. kids who have working moms. In my case no teacher of a class of many kids could have come remotely close to substituting for the loving, cultured, 1-on-1 attention of my stay-at-home-with-the-kids mom.

Out of curiosity, were you homeschooled?

I attended public schools, but thanks to my mom I already knew how to read phonically before starting school, and continued to learn tons of things from books outside of assigned reading during my school years, which became a very helpful life-long habit.

I taught myself because I wanted to play treasure mountain. so I'd write down each word I didnt know and ask my parents.

That's pretty cool. I grew up in the era before educational computer games. It was just good old-fashioned books.

it was a preview of how I'd learn everything else in my life: because it was a component of something bigger I wanted to do. not sure what I learned in classroom, was always desperate to escape (and did so quite often)
