Many (including myself initially) felt sorry for Mueller. But then I thought of the living hell he and his team put the Pres., his family, and this Country through. Clearly his team, including his aide, knew he wasn't well, and used him. But, why didn't Rosenstein force him out?

I've have to agree with your assessment. I watched his eyes - he knew what his job was and played it perfectly. He gave the Dems nothing.
