This distinction is better. I just recall Beautyon getting riled about there not being a "Bitcoin Community".

Never really understood the idea of there being "No bitcoin community." I think some want to give the term a much stricter definition than it actually has but it just means a group that has something in common, especially if it forms a network of interaction in some way.

Already words for this: "group", "set", etc. Before PR people got ahold of the word "community" it meant groups of people who regularly talk to each other. Unless you have a better word for this concept we need to keep using "community" in this crucial traditional sense.

I'm curious, bc I respect your work immensely but our social politics diverge significantly (tho I try to keep an open mind) - if I onboard a bunch of queer liberal weirdos to enthusiastically adopt bitcoin, would you consider them part of "the community, " in this definition?

They would be part of the bitcoin community. But not part of my neighborhood community.

excellent! totally fine with that, & unlike many in identity politics groups, I *acknowledge* that we're a very small minority of society i just don't want to get a bunch of folks hype about bitcoin & then have them aggressively socially policed by the incumbent community

I have to say I've never witnessed anything even close to that in any "Bitcoin circle" I was part of. Even culturally conservative bitcoiners I know are actually very nice/welcoming/pleasant/polite/civilized IRL.

Niceness needs to be merited, otherwise it'll end up erasing the distinction between good and bad conduct. And the result of this would be a greater level of badness overall

There already is a vast amount of bad behavior in the world, and the nicer good people are about it the worse it gets. People who are nice to the destroyers of our families and traditions are facilitators of that destruction, and certainly don't make good political allies.
