The problem with that line of reasoning is that it opens one up to other forms of “Pascal’s Scams.” http://unenumerated.blogspot.com/2012/07/pascals-scams.html?m=1 …

i.e. there are *known* system attributes that you can point to as leading to multiplicative effects / the system lacks effective 'circuit breakers'

I agree wholeheartedly. It's well understood that in a closed system increasing CO2 concentration increases heat trapping. While the effects on climate may be unclear, carbon pollution is currently an externality and market failure. The risk of climate change should be priced in

It's one thing to point out qualitative risks and benefits, and quite another (and according to the above impossible) to quantify them, much less to quantify them in economic terms, that last necessary for figuring out how draconian our economic policies should be in response.

We should be sorting out what is systemic risk from what is not Climate is a global-scale system I too share pessimism around any govt “solutions”

Despite disagreements, actions seems obvious and non-controversial... 1) Invest/innovate to get clean energy cheaper than fossil fuels w/o subsidies 2) Figure out how to take CO2 out of atmosphere, just in case What am I missing?

          (1) is hard without indirectly increasing fossil fuel use (e.g. materials to make windmills) or substantially degrading functionality (from tractors to airplanes to weed-whackers to concrete to much else), (2) would be great if we actually know how to do with reasonable economy.

Great opportunity for pulling CO2 is building soil. Sequesters a looot and is also something with many positive effects and externalities in its own right. Problem is we subsidize soil destroying agriculture, not soil building.

Planting trees and building soil are also good solutions bc less politically controversial. We all want a world with more trees and richer soil. Stopping dumb subsidies would have to come from the right. The left would be accused of attacking "our farmers".
