I'd be more worried if NYTimes said "Bitcoin *hasn't* failed." Receiving approval from NYT is basically like getting a presidential endorsement from David Duke, or having your government praised by Walter Duranty.
Widespread consumer adoption is not required to be a successful form of globally seamless money, it's a later phase nice-to-have. Fiat money imposed on national economies is a very poor role model in this regard

adoption is a way of describing the adaption while similar words - one is definitely more accurate and a better way of marketing a more precise description of the space and what it takes to become a part of it
