It's a manifestation of the ability -- and the temptation, though not necessarily the desire -- to be a successfully deceitful person, and to prize shallow empathy and simulation over deep understanding and reality.

Personally I see mimicry, which is what good acting is, as a peculiar talent that some people just have. Like being funny or athletic, it’s innate but can be honed. I suppose I understand what you mean, though
