I agree, but it doesn't have to be the way...I think is new to all of us and we don't know what to do with it or how to use it properly....with time & experience, we'll learn to be more effective at it.

Unless or until we all go to ambassador's school and learn to be diplomatic, it sadly does have to be that way. And of course foreign relations is also a nonviolent form of warfare, just one that is more polite than social media.
-
*Foreign relations is normally proximately nonviolent. Of course it is ultimately violent, as in based on threats of war and legal coercion such as embargoes, sanctions, etc.

Could it perhaps be a useful way to redirect our bellicose instincts rather than have actual civil wars?
-
Until the enraged flamers start censoring and doxxing and swatting each other, sure.

On a larger scale I can see how it could lead to violence as well, swatting, orginized protests that could turn violent ect.
-
That's why so many people do (and usually should) use pseudonyms, and why doxxing is considered so dangerous. And as the social justice warriors learn more about social media it's getting worse, both verbally nastier and more threats of violence.
-
Yes agree. Those who are anon can voice their opinions on hot button issues, but it gets dangerous to do so if using a real name.

The analytics driven cherry picking of what you're shown on Facebook, based on what is most likely to keep you scrolling, is like a drug. Niche forums give you more control over what you see and how you interact with others.

I think what we are finding is that all social media invariably trends towards conspiracy theories and fake news, sort of a platform version of Godwin’s law. Might be a good argument for starting there and working backwards.

Social media is and always will be a double-edged sword. I doubt it is possible to eliminate all of the bad, as long as humans are in charge of deciding what "bad" means. If humans ever don't have to decide this, it probably means we are no longer the apex predator.

If the worst it gets is dirty social media tricks, that's still better than physical violence. We may actually be doing 'better,' despite the social media shitshow.
