The vast majority of journalists don't have the mental skills to be able to code. That's why they get so insanely offended when somebody gives them career advice that is only appropriate for people who can think logically rather than spew attention-getting click bait.

What I disagree with is, is that that coding is some kind of special. There are difficult professions. Coding is one of those. But it's not the only one. There are many occupations you can't learn in a month or two.

Coding is very special because it scales non-linearly like a niche long-term investment, but gives immediate feedback like in washing dishes. That’s why “software is eating the world” and that’s why many programmers are rich and cocky.

Coding *can* involve engineering, but I don't think it's helpful to consider all shell scripting or all data analysis in SAS to be engng. Yes not easy in general, but "coding" is broad enough that a smart person can find a niche and faster than 8yrs of md school + training.

OTOH, I think I'm smart and a good enough writer but wouldn't fit in at all (to put it lightly) among most journalists and lawyers.
