The vast majority of journalists don't have the mental skills to be able to code. That's why they get so insanely offended when somebody gives them career advice that is only appropriate for people who can think logically rather than spew attention-getting click bait.

Yes, I've heard that on Joe Rogan. Never mind, it's stupid. Some people can't code: I'd been teaching programming and I know. Doesn't mean they're stupid. It takes a special kind of mind. As much as I like to think I'm smarter than journalists, I'm pretty stupid and I know it.
-
Stupid? Is there another skill with better career opportunities that you'd recommend to a stranger? I also can't believe that there are many smart people who can't learn how to code. OTOH, I *can* imagine smart people who'd be bad lawyers, doctors, journalists, engineers, etc..

Professional coding *is* engineering. It usually takes far more mental skill & reward-deferring mental pain than most other professions. Contrary to imbecilic journalist's blathering it is very far from what an average person can pick up in a couple evening classes.
-
What I disagree with is, is that that coding is some kind of special. There are difficult professions. Coding is one of those. But it's not the only one. There are many occupations you can't learn in a month or two.
-
Coding is very special because it scales non-linearly like a niche long-term investment, but gives immediate feedback like in washing dishes. That’s why “software is eating the world” and that’s why many programmers are rich and cocky.
