People are addicted to being ingratiatingly served more than they are addicted to things, and the things last longer than the flattering experiences, so buying things gets delayed more in a recession than buying flattery.

Or... Producing jobs were replaced with machines that won't demand massive pay increases, won't go on strike, and won't have an air of entitlement while smoking pot in the parking lot of their employer. They've been on the decline from 2k to '10.
