Using fuel/"carbon" taxes to fund mass transit is the perpetual project of ignorant planners. When taken to the extreme as in Macron's rural shuttles, victims rightfully rebel. I explain the hidden superiority of personal over planned transport here: https://unenumerated.blogspot.com/2008/04/gas-stations-grant-real-options.html …pic.twitter.com/AnWfxlCfaw

The typical best route for a typical person is between two or more points, generally unknowable to a planner, along a mature road system which forms a space-filling (dendritic) network: ;https://unenumerated.blogspot.com/2014/10/transportation-divergence-and.html … https://twitter.com/NickSzabo4/status/525137982680883201 …https://twitter.com/BelieveInBob/status/900121170623606784 …

I swear the more you have gone against groupthink the more activity on your tweets has dropped, didn't measure this so could be wrong, but when @jack pushes for one group of political thought rather than many competing nuances/parties it makes one wonder.

        1. It's not hidden, it's non-declarative. People know they prefer to use a car but can't necessarily explain why. 2. Mass-transit works best when there are many refueling stations nearby such as taxis or a wide network of other mass transit options.

        1. If the planner is not around, the somebody who knows can't explain it to the planner, so it is hidden from the planner. 2. taxis are an absurdity in rural and most suburban areas (Uber is a slight improvement), for median income workers commuting, etc. etc.

        1. I think part of the problem here is that, in a car-dominated city, it is not sufficient to build pedestrian mass-transit alone. The end points of the mass-transit must also be pedestrian. This is typically not in the planners control. That said smart paths can be found.

        2. Yeah, car taxes and mass transit in rural areas is farcical, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work on a different scale. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of the tyranny of govt, but at a super local level govt can do some cool stuff to improve a city.

You don't get to dictate what people spend their wealth on, or their time doing. That's up to the individual. Cars allow me to go places I could never have travelled, in the sanctity of my own personal space unencumbered by the occupation of other travelers in my vehicle.

1/ This is also similar to the EV revolution happening now. With earlier EV's cars couldn't travel more than 180 miles. With almost no fast charging between cities long distance travel is not practical without meticulous planning.

2/ Today I have no problem driving my Tesla around the country with the supercharger network covering 98% of populated areas. If these stations were deployed/managed by the government it'd be impossible to travel long distances even with a 300+ mile car.
