I dunno, the way they are portrayed, as omniscient AIs that sway the Western masses while the Western mass media, with hundreds of times the readership, helplessly looks on and wails, they sound kinda cool in an "I for one welcome my new god-like alien overlords" kind of way.
Yup, it's a sadly common tactic by out-of-touch governments to demonize domestic opposition that they don't understand and can't bring themselves to believe is actually a big part (in many cases most of) the people they claim to be serving.
