The French protesters aren't protesting against a carbon tax, they're rightly protesting against government lowering taxes on the rich and raising taxes on everyone else.

Carbon taxes in developed nations by their very nature disproportionately hurt working class and rural populations, because they are a tax on tech they depend on. Seemingly despite that (really because of that) leftists have promoted and rightists opposed such taxes.

fair enough, but I also think a vocal minority can be mistaken for a plurality/majority viewpoint (that may not be true in this instance given Macron's approval ratings). For example, we wouldn't say BLM or Antifa viewpoints are popular, even though they are vocal.
