Alternate theory: the universe is a very hostile place, and not hiding leads to death. This expansion happens, but carefully cloaked from detection.
The top dogs wouldn't have to hide. And hiding is hugely costly in terms of lost opportunities to harvest energy, necessary for defending oneself in such a hostile universe. A hiding hypothesis just makes the whole discussion unfalsifiable, as with the shy ways of hobbits.

I wasn’t trying to make it unfalsifiable, just speculating. The alternative seems to be that we are almost divinely unique, and I find that harder to believe.
