So we end up offending each other. Social media is not necessarily socially scalable.

When you start thinking for yourself and don't wait to be ordered what to think and say, you may get this kind of antagonist behaviour towards you. Maybe the price we have to pay for our freedom.

P.S. reminds me of those offended by use of the term"BCash" by those of us who wanted to avoid users confusing that confused fork with Bitcoin. A namee does not get to automatically and unilaterally dictate their name when it can cause confusion. Even moreso for descriptions.

Lol why would someone as smart as nick waste his time with made up names and genders which follow no rationality? You can call yourself whatever you want but don't try force others to call you by ridiculous made up things with no bearing in reality.

Eh, I think in most cases this stuff as "lying about biological sex" is overly black and white if your goal isn't to offend. You can make decent biologically-based arguments for that language in some niche things like professional sports, but in general, who cares?
-
You know, when I was a young teen in early puberty for awhile I was approximately equally attracted to girls and boys. Did my friends or family care? Nope. Later that mostly shifted to girls, though pretty much always the "tomboy" type. Did my friends or family care? Nope.
-
In my case a lot of my friends were gay and lesbian; some transgendered. And a lot weren't. But no-one really cared all that much. And it's notable that I wound up dating a few of those lesbian friends - and they didn't see it as a a crisis of identity or anything.
-
I suspect had I been born 15 years later both my own experience and my friends would be quite a bit different, with more of us pushed to "pigeonhole" ourselves into stricter notions of what our identities are. Black-and-white views probably accelerate this process.
-
In particular, I get the sense that my own experience of what you could objectively call a shifting sexuality as I got older is probably a rather taboo subject due to the current transgender climate. I think that's due to unnecessary polarization and lack of frank and open talk.
-
Remember that these subjects have very different incentives than, say, cryptofinance. We're talking about peoples' personal lives and self identity, not money. You have to re-calibrate your empathy levels for far less financially motivated scams and far more deep emotions.
-
You'r not telling the whole story here though: I would say the key episode is you, running around Milan, on night, wearing my wife's purse.

It reminds them of a time when living was uncomfortable and painful. They wish to put the past behind them. An option many of us would like to invoke.

Imagine you changed your surname to forget your abusive father. And people insist on using your old surname. Completely agree with the OP, simply good manners to respect their wishes, as it is completely not your business anyway, and doesn't impact on your life in any way
