Projects using “proof of something” are classic affinity scams. Proofs of work are actual proofs. You see them and can convince yourself that work was done. “Proof of browsing”, “proof of location” etc aren’t proofs. So why call them that, if not to mislead the crypto community?pic.twitter.com/RmOXM4Pagn

To be fair, @BrendanEich isn’t remotely the only one doing it. I’m just pointing to this example (again and again) because many people seem to fall for it

And by the way, in this case it’s worse, because these so-called “proofs” are used to release rewards or in other words to dilute investors. Investors expect these are actual proofs, but obviously they aren’t, they’re circumstantial evidence at best (and I’m guessing not public)

Udi, why waste your time policing language? It's an organic evolving social construct. The worse kind of argument is the semantic kind. "Proof of work" also isn't proof of labor. Oh but people understand that now? New terms always trade of preciseness for suggestiveness

Meaningful language is essential for efficient comms. Dumbing down words is a real problem, it creates real-world confusion and it's directly affecting my professional life. This kind of discussion helps me establish common language with colleagues and is the opposite of waste

(and proof of work is, well, very much a proof of work. Why not?)

Saying X means X only reaffirms the subjectivity of language. Before Adam Back coined that term for hashcash, when was the word work ever associated with a bunch of computers vying to win a hash lottery?

"Proof" has for many centuries been associated with mathematical proofs, and in this case secure mathematical proofs. Using it in the cryptocurrency context for a "trust me this actually happened" piece of information is a grossly dishonest abuse of language. Well worth policing.

What if the "proof" in question is trust minimized but used in a context that is more like a legal process than a mathematical one? Like "proof of process" in supply chain logistics referring to a chain of evidence about things happening in the world? Is that abusive?

Of course it's abusive. Do you see anyone using that term except for blockchain affinity scams? This term has no meaning in the business domain of logistics. People use it strictly when trying to get cryptocurrency people to invest in domains they don't understand.
