Almost every other country I’ve been to requires international travelers leaving the county to clear a passport control on the way out. There is often a little gate that presumably would not open if the light goes red for you. The US feels freer in this way.

Of course it would be much easier to track overstays if you logged everyone who is leaving so there is an argument. Rights must be periodically exercised or you don’t know if you really have them. This includes the right to leave wherever you are. So leave. Often.
