This is why Monero will win. People who value privacy and fungibility will move their funds to Monero and will stay within that ecosystem, including 2nd layer networks which pass around Monero transactions.

I don’t think so. Ring signatures can obfuscate the linkage but chain analysis is usually able to find connections within high probability. ZKPs are the only viable solution (even with ZKPs there are ways to find connections if users aren’t careful but far less).
-
Even if Monero is not perfect now, it has a culture dedicated to fungibility which is successfully rolling out hard forks every 6mo. ZKPs are not technically viable now, when they are, Monero will absorb that technology, just like they absorbed Bulletproofs.
-
Watch the increasing transaction volume on BitSquare, the first decentralized crypto currency exchange. Monero dominates there. The infrastructure by which huge capital will flow into private fungible crypto currency is in place.

This is a good argument against the establishment which claims crypto is only good for use by criminals.

Right? As if criminal and profit-driven are wholly separate things

Interesting. If/when blockchain goes mainstream in different individual countries. Governments and banks will have a good opportunity to track down criminals a long time after the money changes hands. Because blockchains do not forget. Right?

I presume there are many "bad" people who have gotten rich through the early exploits of bitcoin that never cashed out their wealth from cryptocurrencies in order to stay hidden. And incidentally got much richer because they had to hold on to it. ugh. the ignorance..
