Told that one of these nations was destined to travel around Africa & conquer the main sea trade routes of the world, one would think this prophecy must refer to the vast and ancient civilization with its giant fleets, not the tiny one with small fleets. https://unenumerated.blogspot.com/2006/10/how-to-succeed-or-fail-on-frontier.html …

Uselessness has its important use cases The race to the moon Was a Peacock's tail The Americans showed that they can carry it Communism couldn't It was not an empty victory With a change in context The practical, pay-as-you-go way Seems to carry the day

Interesting also like the decentralized political systems of Europe (in perennial conflict) also were source of innovation/economic/scientific developments (from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution) that outpaced the Great Empires of the Middle Ages.

agree that finding revenue in the space like tourism and micro-satellites will boost space exploration instead of the show off of current state-baked missions, great article about the portuguese and their early expansions

It was actually a little to do with a small thing called religion. One was extremely aggressive and the other relatively pacifistic.

Great read. I love history pieces that are relatable today. 15th century was a wild time. Ottomans conquered Constantinople (1453). The success being credited partially to the cannon, the high tech of the day, of which the Hungarians were the most capable cannon engineers.

Ming dynasty would not succeed ,it was just the centralized Gov. US would not succeed ,it was just the "centralized Funeral" 😆 But who will succeed? Those who pay the sounding rocket and small satellite with $BTC and $ETC . "The decentralized community".
