As a mathematician, no. As an applied cryptographer - absolutely. Math is all fun and games until the software rendition fails in the real world for annoying edge cases of reality.
Though I have had to read a lot of Hal's code... 
Understanding the need for gold-like but securely digital sound money, understanding the aforesaid technology, *and* being able to code it was an extremely rare intersection of knowledge and skill sets.
You do have a point insofar as the OP was about the core tech building blocks of Bitcoin, and in that sense Hal and Wei and I etc. figuring out how to put it together to make sound money ill fit in with that list. Apples and Oranges.
I can't speak for Bitcoin, but understanding malicious-fault ("Byzantine") consenus, hash chains/trees, proof-of-work (missed that one above, darn) and public key cryptography was crucial for my design of bit gold in 1998.
