The new fence should be made with much stronger material, so that it won't get torn down this time. Example: Bitcoin with good key management can be much more securely stored than gold, and being digital is more securely and far more inexpensively transportable than gold.

The Gold standard could be knocked down because people were not protecting it, they got complacent and accepted the paper proxies even after they were no longer redeemable in anything else than themselves. Bitcoin is also not immune to complacency that will follow its success.

Agreed, and I think complacency is a bigger threat to Bitcoin than to gold, since the upkeep of the network relies on incentives/continual vigilance. And once the system decays it’s probably harder to come back.https://twitter.com/hugohanoi/status/1098603773369466883?s=21 …

It probably will revert to a centralized system & die a slow death. The ledger itself might survive & get resurrected in a distant future, but probably with even smaller chance of success. This is my main concern when it comes to Bitcoin’s long term survival. The human factor.

What do you consider good key management for an individual? Any errors that most people currently make? (besides just keeping coins held by third party)

Letting somebody else do the whole thing is definitely the biggest error. But going whole-hog the other way and never backing up or sharing with an heir is also an error. Hard to get right with current generation wallets.
