I wonder if we'll see phone companies start blocking 2fs sms messages? They could be seen as a liability — rightfully so.https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2018/08/15/cryptocurrency-investor-sues-att-for-224-million-over-loss-of-digita.html …

Though for the record, I would like to see AT&T lose this case, badly. If you design a system based on personal info you damn well should shoulder the liability when you screw it up.

Baloney. Their system collects personal info for the purposes of phone billing, not for the purpose of trying to secure a relationship of two strangers trying to pretend they know each other because of said phone number.

I think the issue is their system allows numbers to be ported too easily. Not that they collect info.

But their system is designed for people to call each other so that they can order fast food. Not to secure a $25m irreversible transaction

Calling with a sob story is no reason to transfer a SIM. It is ridiculous.

That’s true. But there has to be a limit for how much liability they can have when things go wrong. I think it should be around what it costs to subscribe to their services for a month. Maybe a year. 5 years? Definitely not a million years though

No there should not be any limit on liability ever. What should be the case is them having proper process and require physical person + ID to be shown before a SIM transfer can commence. This isn't rocket surgery.

Infinite liability for relationships they didn't set up and have no knowledge of? You might as we just pass a law straightforwardly banning phone companies.

Their process, according to themselves, is that you have to show up in person with an ID. Then they don't honor that. As a customer, I should have a reasonable expectation that they follow the process they set forth.

If they don't actually do that then it's not really their process, is it? So why do idiots who pretend it is their process get to pass the buck for their failed commercial relationships on to them? Ridiculous.
