BOLT software release would not be possible without support from the @ZcashFoundation, @matthew_d_green and @secparam. BOLT also builds on bn lib and bulletproofs. Thanks to @ebfull , @hdevalence, @isislovecruft and others for their work! This is just the beginning...https://twitter.com/mineZcash/status/1029531839818620928 …

Does Monero have limited "scalability"? Why wouldnt the founders have added to BTCs privacy instead creating a seperate coin?
-
It's a very good thing to have different coins doing different things, serving different purposes and different people, performing a wide variety of experiments.

Nick, one of the strengths of Monero over Zcash is in a decentralized governance and developer community solely focused on pricacy. Zcash has made compromises to user privacy (having default transparent addresses which decreases the anonymity set) to increase adoption.
-
The Zcash founders reward reduces the social scalability - development is led by a centralized team based in the US. Monero has over 500 contributors and you don’t need to know or be anybody to participate eg open source

The forums reveal a wild mix of ideas on what direction ZEC should go (e.g. proof of stake) but only a few decision makers. Once ZEC has developed hidden-only transactions, it will be forked to remove the reward but at the genesis block, devaluing current holders.

Purchasing and holding Monero allows you store your wealth in a hidden and trust minimized way. If you walk away for 10 years, no party will be able to influence the project in a way that reduces your privacy.

We're not against Monero, but it's worth noting that the projects make different technical tradeoffs. Some research on deanonymization possibilities for each: 1) Monero: https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmWYTeggKeL8xBitA8uQWAaNDWfFrUHXAxBXkvmnisdDw7 … 2) Zcash: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1805.03180.pdf …

As
@StarmuteVII posts below, there were several issues with that paper, most concerningly the hyperbolic claims made for press coverage and lack of acknowledgement on prior work done by@monero research lab. The authors quantified the scale of an issue that was i) already identified ~2.5 years before, ii) fixed ~1 year before, iii) widely discussed, iv) impacted users prior to Monero being used with real volume, v) and then lied about the scale of the issue for media attention.pic.twitter.com/v3G3raZ11z
