Nick is right. Windows and everything to do with Microsoft is a big problem. Build your house on sand... https://twitter.com/NickSzabo4/status/1027727719159582720?s=09 … https://ift.tt/2MgFWJS

100% correct. You can't build on a single platform like AWS or Azure and then expect that they will never turn on you. Access to other people's platforms is not a right, it's a service. If you must build something, it should be generic that can run on _any server anywhere_.
-
Migration should also be simple also as a defensive measure. What is happening to GAB right now is a very clear signal; Do not tightly integrate your services on CALISOC platforms. Doing so is building in a serious vulnerability that you'll have to fix later as an emergency.

This is the "They're already surveiling us, so why bother encrypting your email". Solve one problem at a time, and don't make more problems for yourself. It;s pretty basic stuff. With this attitude, no one would try to do anything at all.

Imagine if Linus thought, "Everyone is on MS, and anyone who wants UNIX can buy it. Why bother?". We wouldn't have Linux. Projects take years to come to fruition sometimes; you have to start with the right principles and not be weak minded, constantly searching for gotchas.

Not your hardware, not your software OR data. I will never replace my colocated servers for any third-party cloud provider.

Any suggestions for a way forward then? For all their faults, this was something that at least a few Altcoins we're trying to address, like MaidSafe (or perhaps projects trying to fund themselves via Altcoins is a better description).
