I mute because it give them a little empty satisfaction to block me, which many of them dearly need. It is neither here nor there to me as long as I do not have the distraction they can cause.

I find mute often does not work very well. It has technical limitations (I often still see supposedly muted people in my timeline, for whatever reason), and also because they distract the conversation and I can only see part of it. Act poorly on my timeline and get blocked.
