"Con artist" is a good description of socialists generally, actually. Socialist leaders are the artists and their followers are the ones being conned.
Since we're talking about LatAm -- what about Ecuador? they doubled social spending as a % of GDP and cut extreme poverty in half, reduced inequality, improved health outcomes, increased education, increased incomes? What about the nordic countries?
Nordic countries are actually quite capitalist (high on economic freedom), save for the welfare system, which they are constantly reforming. But they were successful before the welfare state as well. All have strong right wing parties, often also center-right governments
Totally fair -- I'm curious on Nick's thoughts on democratic socialist countries. Usually the "socialism is evil" folks aren't too fond of dem socialist socialist systems either.

Yeah, good point. Socialism = govt controls the means of production and distributes. Democratic socialism, which is what people generally mean on twitter when they say "socialism", is obviously not that.
