Hard to tell whether those events strengthened it, or its inherent game theoretic construction inevitably led to those events. Satoshi vanishing may have been the last piece of game theory required for immunity...

It's mostly good protocol design, partly luck, partly as Adam pointed out hard work (of people reifying good core principles to fight the hiearchs), and only very partly game theory, which is helpful but can't reliably predict outcomes in such complex social situations.

Fortunate outcome but hard earned. People fought very hard, rallied community, education, started conferences, activist traders put holdings on the line to hold the decentralised value proposition line, in the face of what seemed like in the heat significant coordinated hierarchy

I still remember that time when @AmirPolyteknik was fighting against the Bitcoin Foundation.
-
Yeah, he was fast in distrusting the organization. It took longer for others like me (fortunately I never donated anything, wasn't concerned but also wasn't particularly excited about it)

I wonder who you mean by "Bitcoin's elite" and how you think this "authority" is exercised. In the end free software is by definition software that respects the user's freedom and every single user can chose the consensus rules he wants.

Not just Greg. *Most* of the core devs were against BIP148. It was wonderful to see the user community route around them, the so called "community" leaders pushing S2X, and the miners holding segwit hostage.

But mining centralization still needs to be solved. It's an oversight of Satoshi.
