At some point, the church will accept contraception and female and non-celibate priests. Could it be in the next papacy?

      @rowsterr But if they can only participate in non-Roman rites, means they're imposed limitations celibate priests don't have? @NickKristof

      @mrsunlawyer became strict only in medieval ages. but this was only true of roman rites. in other catholic churches different rules.

      @rowsterr Hm, checking out http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clerical_celibacy_(Catholic_Church) … which states it's a strict requirement.

      @mrsunlawyer wikipedia entry is wrong. makes common mistake of equating "catholic" with "roman catholic." not all catholics are roman!!!

      @rowsterr No, but like I said, usual connection with Pope in ordinary scheme of things is with RCC. And the RCC requires celibacy, yes?

      @mrsunlawyer It is a requirement, but it is not doctrinal. It can be removed if the Papacy saw fit to do so. @rowsterr

      @raggster Wonder why it hasn't been removed yet, too? Some critics feel this requirement is what fuels sexual abuse by priests @rowsterr

      .@NickKristof the Pope doesn't represent the entire 'church'...for many 'churches' that is already the case!

      @NickKristof non-celibacy is allowed for Anglican coverts. I suspect a V3 council will convene and examine these issues.

      @JayanthNazareth @NickKristof I would have thought this would happen with or post John Paul II, and it did not. Benedict seemed MORE rigid.

      @LucyBklyn @NickKristof In reality John Paul II was conservative. He cracked down on the Jesuits and humilated their superior
