Biden's $1.9 trillion plan could ultimately do for child poverty something like what FDR's Social Security plan did for poverty among senior citizens. My new column:https://nyti.ms/3qCrYSN

I also make an argument from, of all places, Bangladesh. This month marks Bangladesh's 50 anniversary -- happy birthday, Bangladesh! -- and it was born in genocide and starvation. But it has become an unexpected success. In recent years, it has grown faster than China.

Bangladesh even has achieved a life expectancy higher than in parts of the United States (including higher than in 10 counties in Mississippi). It has made huge strides in nutrition and health care. What was its secret?

Bangladesh invested in educating its most marginalized citizens, village girls. Today, Bangladesh has more girls in high school than boys. Those educated women became the backbone of the garment industry and of NGOs like BRAC and Grameen. They transformed the country.

So a former "basket case" has something to teach the world: Investing in marginalized people is where the highest returns are; this isn't just about compassion but about helping a nation soar. That, I think, is what Biden's plan to fight child poverty doeshttps://nyti.ms/3qCrYSN

THIS is making good use of our taxes helping families, businesses, economy. It is massive; I am guessing Biden, et al were hard at work on this bill prior to Jan 20, working in our best interests. Finally, an actual president

1/2 Beautiful Bangladesh is incredibly overlooked - with a pop. density 3x India's, the country's GDP per capita exceeded India's in 2020! @nickkristof, thank you for not perpetuating 🇧🇩's usual "doom-and-gloom" PR coverage and instead shined light on all its incredible movement.
