In fact, people evolved to be intuitively moral, other-regarding, reciprocal and cooperative. The basic human moral instinct to help others, even if nothing is in it for you, is the essential survival trait of our species. No cooperation, no homo sapiens. .

I’ve had this argument with conservatives on Reddit before. They legitimately believe that altruism cannot exist. In either the sense that you get nothing, or that you get more than you receive. Oddly, they even considered “feeling good” as part of that.
-
For example, when they volunteer; they’re posting on social media to get adoration from friends/colleagues/etc. They can’t believe that someone would go out of their way and do something without even caring whether someone recognizes it or not.

This blind spot on the actual essence of human nature explains why conservatives are so wrong about basic economics, and why they all seem like selfish sociopaths to normal people. They mistook a theoretical simplification in econ to make the math work for truth on the ground.

Rejecting this assumption about what people are and how we should behave is at the core of what it will take to make a better society. https://democracyjournal.org/arguments/homo-economicus-must-die/ …

It also suggests that businesses don’t take from their community & environment, which of course they do, voluntarily or not.

It also embodies the conservative fallacy that all people are self-made on their own merits, and that successful people gained nothing from their community, family and society.
-
Also seems rather reductionist, no? Do you actually see conservatives who explicitly say that ALL people are self-made on their own merits, or that successful people gained NOTHING from their community, family or society? I guess I've missed those conservative thinkers.

With this tweet, Grover Norquist sets in stone his status as a supremely irrelevant wackadoo who doesn't deserve a second of any reasonable person's time or attention going forward.https://twitter.com/GroverNorquist/status/1084456258705473536 …
