My latest paper is out in the Journal of Theoretical Biology, and it’s a big one! An ambitious, 20,000-word examination of the nature of the living cell in light of recent research (spoiler alert: the answer to the title is 'No'!):

Inspired by a recent thread from , I read the paper from on the concept of mechanism Asking "what is the mechanism" is not appropriate because the definition of mechanism itself is unclear.

This is cool work that you are doing, and it's very much needed. What you and and others are doing is vitally important, really critical.

Write Dupre and : An organism finds itself "needing to act to continue to exist ...[It] is always acting (or working, in the thermodynamic sense), as it must remain permanently displaced from equilibrium if it is to stay alive."

¿Es la una "máquina"? Casi todo lo que aprendimos ya NO sirve. ¡Es hermoso! Nos da la oportunidad de seguir aprendiendo y nos protege de la arrogancia epistémica.

  7. My interview with David Teira () about the 75th anniv. of Schrödinger's 'What is Life?' for a public philosophy program on Spanish national radio is now available to listen online! I had so much fun answering the questions I didn't want it to end

Oh! This paper (“Is the cell really a machine?”), by , is maybe the most exciting I’ve read in the last year. It covers a HUGE amount of territory, & pulls together so much good recent research, to paint a thrillingly new picture of cell biology. Read it!

Its explanatory value was its seemingly conclusive demonstration of the absurdity of the Copenhagen interpretation of QM when it's macroscopic implications are thought through. Ironically, instead of refuting it (which is what Schrödinger intended) it only served to popularize it

  21. Ever wondered what Schrödinger was *really* up to when he decided to turn his attention to biology in 1943? And what is 'What is Life?' about anyway? Come to the KLI tomorrow at 5 and find out!
