Reassurance to those freaking out: you are still way more likely to get into Oxbridge if you attend private school than state school; and the TARGETS for reducing inequality would still give Oxbridge c. 7.5 times more kids from the wealthiest areas than poorest ones!/

The irony in all this is that Britain's ruling classes spent centuries turning Oxbridge into an indispensable part of their kids' education, but are now finding out that there's a whole country of talented kids who might have as strong a claim on a place - perhaps stronger.

We've seen these attacks on 'access' before. Remember last year when the head of one of Britain's swankiest schools compared 'discrimination' against private-school kids to anti-Semitism?

And then we get the usual dog-whistle headlines from the Telegraph and Times, which imply that this is about "diversity" (i.e. race) when really it's about encouraging talented people from underrepresented backgrounds to take their seat at the table - which is long, long overdue.

The 'benevolent' line of the private school industry is to nod at making Oxbridge more accessible to poorer people, then to demand that we build new colleges and create more places to ensure that the richest students don't miss out. This isn't how a meritocracy works, guys.

I don't speak for the University but from my own experience I know that talented students, whatever their background, have every chance of a place. But while you can buy your way into private school you shouldn't be able to buy your way into Oxbridge. And that upsets some people.

This is your occasional reminder that plans to make Oxbridge more representative aren't social engineering; the system that made Oxbridge wildly _unrepresentative_ is social engineering, and that's what has begun to change.

Yesterday at the impeachment trial: Trump lawyer Robert Ray admiringly cites Sean Wilentz's and Jim McPherson's attack on #1619 Project as he insists that the case against Trump is based on "ahistorical sleight of hand" and "revisionist hindsight." 😬

Before we celebrate this as “deserved” let’s remember that the very poorest in these areas, often younger, asset poor and who probably *didn’t* vote Tory, will be hit hardest by austerity in these areas

There are many insightful reactions to the critiques of the circulating, and I thought I might add one small contribution. Wilentz's latest concludes w/ Du Bois, and that rubbed me the wrong way. I'll explain in this thread.

A great deal has been written in the last few weeks about the efforts of a small group of historians to say the has glaring factual error that must be corrected. Others have tried to discredit the project all together. Now historians are pushing back. A THREAD.

Critics of & the insist the "facts" don’t support its proslavery reading of the American Revolution. But they obscure a longstanding debate within the field of U.S. history over that very issue. By David Waldstreicher:
