I get your point^^ it has been a main driver for the whole warcraft history, but as you said: in the meantime it seems like the story is constructed around that restriction of having 2 factions. At the same time the story has been bent so much that it makes no sense anymore
e.g. we have shadow-blood-elves at the alliance now, the tauren are still at the horde, where after the world tree burning they would never have stayed with the horde. I didn't buy why the suramar elves would join the horde.

It feels dumb that as a player you help a faction, and then they become your enemies just because of their race and a shallow lore-bending to make it fit somehow (suramar, high tauren, lightforged, vulpera, mechagnomes)

The neutral factions are always the weird ones (Shadowlands looks set to be another). I agree on the Tauren point. I just think whilst it removes the need to have some sort of faction divide each expansion it also removes any future divisions.
