Not really... people wanted to avoid the crap that was in the real world. Now a days the real world is part of the internet and sometimes even a typical multiplayer game has a bad communities. MMOs don't take it worse by some universal law. Its the kind of ppl it attracts.

Additionally to that. Hypermedia everywhere, being online/available everywhere. Computers and the WWW have become a big part of Society/Work/Education, it is safe to say that a lot of us are "tired" of too much technology. It is logical that a lot of us want some "offliness".
