I think its because alot of the things that worked in classic had a reward system tied to it that made the player enjoy the extra time and effort it took to get. Retail has very little of the original wow's leveling reward systems in place so the slower pace simply doesnt work.

That is the uniquenes of mmos.Y keep playing them at all when everything will be meaningless when next expansion comes out. But within the content cycle, u must present engaging and properly rewarded systems. When i say properly rewards. That doesnt mean shower every1 with purples

Maybe blizz has tried to hard to please every part of their player-base, or shift to the more "attractive" type of consumers, which are the casual, ingame shop, ex-farmville players. I think this game got just too complex to have an overall system that can please all...

Thats how MMOs with expansions work. It's part of the deal you agree to when entering the MMO space. Its never bothered me like at all.

a lot of players argue that was NOT the feeling one had when entering the game in classic. Personally it is not bothering since I understand why it is so. But of course it makes me less likely to spend a lot of effort since the "gain" is only "temporal" in my now fast paced life.
